Rescue Drilling Unit

The Chamber of Mines' rescue drilling unit is situated at CTC.

The unit, with the aid of personnel of CTC, is responsible for the assistance/rescue after a mine accident due to fire, roof collapse, explosions, etc. The unit is on 24 hour standby.

The unit drills a hole (150mm diameter) into the underground area where an accident occurred, firstly to assess the underground area and secondly to establish communication and to supply food and water.

A large diameter hole (635mm diameter) is then drilled through which personnel can be brought to safety by means of a capsule pulled through the hole.

The unit is also available to companies who require a hole to be drilled for production purposes.
